E Security Awareness Week - Protecting Online Users

Last modified: June 9, 2009 - 11:47 AM

With the increased popularity of online banking, shopping and communicating, the need to be aware of computer security is more important than ever, according to Member for Farrer Sussan Ley.

Ms Ley is urging all Australians to get involved in National E Security Awareness Week to raise awareness about E Security for home and small business users.

Millions of Australians are now using the internet for a whole range of everyday activities.  The internet is very useful and entertaining, however it is important that users stay smart and think about online security, especially when giving out sensitive personal information.

A range of events and activities will be held around Australia in metropolitan, remote and regional areas to help Australians understand E security risks as part of the awareness week, from 5 to 12 June 2009.

Events are aimed to help inform home users, students and small business about the simple steps they can take to protect themselves, their families and their businesses online.

Simple tips are being promoted throughout the Week will help Australians use the internet in a secure and confident manner:

  • Get a better, stronger password and change it at least twice a year
  • Get security software, and update and patch it regularly
  • Stop and think before you click on links or attachments from unknown sources
  • Information is valuable.  Be careful about what you give away about yourself and others online
