Water for Food CampaignLast modified: April 27, 2009 - 3:06 PM
Council has agreed to contribute to and support the Water for Food Campaign co ordinated by the Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils (RAMROC). The campaign is to develop and roll out an integrated public relations strategy to protect the future sustainability of irrigated food production, processors and communities in Australia from the potential adverse impacts of political and regulatory responses to drought and climate change, as well as water market reforms which unfairly restrict water availability to food producers.
The marketing strategy will be aimed at politicians, media, regional communities, irrigated food producers and the education sector, so it will have an extremely broad reach. Some of the key aims resulting from the campaign would be to achieve a sensible balance between the needs for environmental water, the maintaining of agricultural food production levels and future sustainability of communities, and the long term certainty of a fixed and guaranteed share of Murray Darling Basin water resources to ensure security of food production. The Water for Food strategy is currently still in its initial stages, but Council feels this is an extremely important campaign and is giving our full support.
