Latest NewsGarbage/Recycling Services Over Christmas Period 09 - 06 Nov 2009Ellwaste have notified Council that they will do the garbage/recycling run for Friday 25th December (Christmas Day) on Sunday 27th December instead. The garbage pickup for Friday 1st January has been re-scheduled for Sunday 3rd January 2010. Please note these changes to avoid problems with bins over the Christmas Period.

The Nationals, John Williams, Member for Murray Darling announced that Community Groups from the Murray Darling electorate will be eligible to apply for funding under the new $35 million building fund announced in the NSW Budget to support jobs, stimulate growth and improve community facilities.
The NSW Community Building Partnership will invest $300,000 into building local community projects in each of the 93 NSW electoral districts, but Murray Darling will receive a further $100,000 more because we are considered a district with higher umemployment.
Wakool Shire Council has this week endorsed a report outlining the socio-economic impacts on the local community should water leave the district.
The detailed report is the result of a study initiated by Council in response to community concerns with the Federal Government’s water reform initiative being delivered through its $12.9 billion Water for the Future program.

Wakool Shire Council has reminded its residents to be mindful of local roads during this much welcomed wet-weather.
Director of Engineering Services, Brian Ebery said people travelling on rural roads should be cautious when driving or find alternative routes.
There has been a 97.6 per cent increase in the number of reported whooping cough cases in the Greater Southern Area Health Service.
There have been 296 reported cases in the first three months of the year, compared to 30 for the same period last year, according to the Minister for Health, John Della Bosca MLC.
Tests have revealed the presence of Blue Green Algae in the Murray, Wakool and Edward Rivers.
The former red alerts, have been downgraded to an Amber alert for the Murray River at Barham, Tooleybuc and Murray Downs as well as the Edward River at Moulamein and Wakool River at Kyalite - however caution with regard to use of this water is still required.
Councils potable (filtered) water systems are not affected, as the water is treated through the filtration plant.
Council strongly recommends that where the only source of water is from the raw system, than an alternative source of water for household use ie drinking, cooking and personal hygiene be arranged.
In congratulating all successful Shires Mr Williams said the funds gained are used for communities to improve facilities at local Clubs and grounds.
Residents are being encouraged to join a national challenge to record data about rabbits, from at least 5000 sites across Australia.

State Member for Murray Darling, John Williams, has slammed the Federal Government for claiming to understand the importance of creating jobs but then announcing it want the Barmah Forest to close because of green leek parrots which would cause 350 Deniliquin based employees to lose their jobs if the Gulpa Sawmill was to shut its doors.
In a move that would effectively crush the economy of Deniliquin after the closure of its other main employer, SunRice in November 2007, in which approximately 80 people lost their jobs, Mr Williams said there has to be common sense when it comes to managing peoples livelihoods and the long term benefits of wildlife conservation.
The Australian Sports Commission and Australian Government Office for Women are looking to develop the next generation of female leaders in sport by offering the 2009/10 Sport Leadership Grants and Scholarships for Women (SLGWS).
Substantial funding for organisations and individuals is available, with applications now open.
Council has agreed to contribute to and support the Water for Food Campaign co ordinated by the Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils (RAMROC). The campaign is to develop and roll out an integrated public relations strategy to protect the future sustainability of irrigated food production, processors and communities in Australia from the potential adverse impacts of political and regulatory responses to drought and climate change, as well as water market reforms which unfairly restrict water availability to food producers.
