How Can I Help in My Community?

You can participate in the Relay for Life Fundraiser for the Cancer Council.  The closest event to us is being held in Swan Hill.

The date has been set for Friday 20th & Saturday 21st October 2006.  Starting at 6.00pm on the Friday and concluding Saturday at 3.00pm.  This years event will be held at the Ken Harrison (Soccer Grounds) Reserve in Yanna Street.

In Australia, Relay for Life has gone from strength to strength, with the first event in 1999 being at Murrumbeena with 34 teams, which raised $75,000.  In 2005, there were more than 34 Relays in Victoria and 100 Relays held throughout Australia.  Relays is the biggest fund raising event on the Cancer Council Calendar.

The Swan Hill Relay has raised a fantastic $250,000 over the five years of participation.  The funds raised enables the Cancer Council of Victoria to provide support, research, early detection and prevention by education.

Raising Funds

Each team member in Relay for Life is encouraged to raise $100 towards their team total.  Therefore, if a team has 15 members, the aim is to raise $1500.  Most teams choose to fundraise as a team, and then aim for a grand total rather than individual amounts.

Relay for Life is not a pledge style event, so you should not seek promises of money for each lap you complete.  Donations should be collected and banked prior to the event, which saves you having to go back to collect money afterwards.  Offer receipts for donations over $2.00.

Upon request Relay for Life can supply Relay team members with an authority to fundraise letter on behalf of the Cancer Council.  This authority to fundraise letter will be produced on request when asking for donations or sponsorship.  If a team requires an authority letter please contact Libby on 03 50324841 or Viv on 03 50331216.
