Safer Boating on Lakes & Inland WatersSafer Boating for Lakes & Inland Waters An information pamphlet outlining guidelines for safer boating on lakes and inland wetlands has been produced with the combined efforts of CFA, NSW RFS, NSW Fire Brigades and NSW Waterways.MANDATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO HAVE WITH YOU PFD (life jackets) 1 x per person Waterproof torch Waterproof torch at night (NSW) Bailing Bucket Bilge pump An appropriate fire extinguisher Fire extinguisher for 1/2 cabin vessels 2 oars or paddles on boats (less than 5 metres) Anchor and line (NSW)REMEMBER: Reciprocal arrangements exist for registration and safety equipment between all StatesHIGHLY RECOMMENDED EXTRAS First Aid kit Radio or telephone Maps Spare Fuel Sunscreen & hat Additional warm clothesSAFETY CHECK Check life jackets Check fire equipment Check first aid equipment Check the weather forecast Check for mechanical faults on the boat Check/know your location in case of emergencySAFETY EXTRAS Fit a smoke alarm (if you sleep on board) Keep a fire blanket in the galley/kitchen Correctly install fuel and LPG Maintain electrical systems Fit detection for gas and fuel vapour Have fire extinguishers inspected every 12 months, and serviced after any use Listen for total fire ban reports Turn off gas fridge when not in useMARINE REFUELLING Disembark passengers before refueling Do not smoke Turn off pilots to gas refrigerators Turn off engines and power Avoid static sparks from filling nozzle Avoid spillage Avoid overfilling Thoroughly clean up spillage Ventilate the boat Investigate the bilges for fumes If fumes detected or there is spillage, allow the boat to ventilate for at least 30 minutes, manually pump bilges Start the motor before allowing passengers on boardFACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW The 0.5 blood alcohol law applies to boat operators Children under 10 must wear life jackets All vessels with motors must be registered All safety equipment must be well maintained and readily assessable at all times When ashore remember an area of 3 metres all around and above a campfire must be cleared. The fire must be 7.5 metres from a log or stump and no more than 1 square metre. An adult must supervise the fire at all times On a Total Fire Ban day campfires are forbidden.
