PERMITS TO BURN - WHEN, WHO & WHAT TO DO
RURAL FIRE SERVICE DETAILS ON PERMITS TO BURN - Permits are usually required from 1st October to 31st March each year, excluding the no burn period from 1st December to 1st February. This period could be extended depending upon the conditions of the season.
- Permits will not be issued from 1st December to 1st February each year as is considered the most dangerous time for bushfire period.
- Permits to burn are available from brigade permit officers and the conditions of the permit are to be followed by both parties, ie notification of RFS Office in Deniliquin, plus neighbouring property owners, all details to be completed on the permit ie property name, dates permit covers etc.
- Permits may be issued for up to 21 days.
- Permit burns are only to be conducted during weekdays, not on weekends or public holidays.
- Permits are required for all agricultural fires during the bush fire danger period. Permits are not necessary for minor fires or burning garden refuse adjacent to residences and for cooking and/or heating, however a 3 metre clear space must be provided around the fire. Garden refuse can not be burnt before 8.00pm (daylight saving) and must be out by 7.00am the next morning.
- No fires are to be lit before 4.00pm and are to be extinguished by midnight and must be supervised at all times.
- No burning of timber, only grass and stubble.
- Neighbours, National Parks & State Forests (if adjoining property or within 1km), Mid Murray Zone Office and brigade captain must be notified prior to burning.
- Adequate fire breaks must be established around the area to be burnt and trees must be protected prior to burn.
- Other conditions may be applied by permit officer, captain or Mid Murray Zone Office as required or deemed necessary.
