Monthly Mayoral MessageLast modified: August 25, 2009 - 12:19 AM
Council has been invited to take part in a research project titled ‘Transformation for Resilient Landscapes and Communities’. This project will explore the best ways for our communities to adapt to changes brought about by water leaving the area, whether through water buybacks, climate change or the drought in general. Given the impact that a reduction in water has had on the shire and the impact that it may have in the future Council has decided to take part in the initiative. It is a well partnered project with Murray CMA, Natural Resources Commission, Charles Sturt University and the Australian National University all on board. This project will not only involve Council but will primarily deal with our local community, giving them access to professionals who deal with change issues and social impacts and assisting them in their efforts to get ahead of the changes. We believe this will be a worthwhile project as our Shire has a great range of community groups to face the assessment, some of which are already very active on this topic and have identified the issues related to climate change, water reforms and the changes involved. Council is keen to begin working with the community to plan for the future on a variety of levels, and projects like these provide a good start. We are certainly now in a great position to begin consultation with the community on various matters as we welcome our new Community Development Officer, Joy Mason to Council. With Joy on board we now hope to set out a clear plan for each of our local communities so we can concentrate our efforts and work with each community on future developments or projects. Last Thursday saw the opening of Tullakool and Noorong ‘s new fire stations. We had terrific attendance and a lunch at Tullakool that was true country catering. Thanks to the Tullakool Brigade for such a terrific spread. Congratulations to Len Hulands on his award for 59 years of service to the brigade and the other members who received awards. Council also this month decided to provide sponsorship towards the 2009 Koondrook Barham Redgum Showcase event. It is vitally important that we get behind the redgum industry now more than ever. We commend the committee for their determination to continue to showcase the industry despite the enormous pressure put on local redgum communities over recent years. Cr O’Neill, General Manager Chris Chapman and I attended a meeting with the Natural Resources Commission who are investigating the future management of the redgum forests in our area last Friday in Deniliquin. With our neighbouring Shires we had very good discussion with the members of the panel. Headed by Professor John Williams and with experts on aspects of forestry, the group visited the forest to take a look at our management, and also had a look at the sawmills and some of the manufacturing businesses. They took a keen interest in our points of concern and we hope this will bring a positive outcome for our industry. Till Next Month- Cr Rod Chalmers - Mayor
